![]() ![]() ![]() A few found fame as small children, some had to wait decades to get their break. ![]() Some craved fame while others had it forced upon them. Whether it was the scandalous Lord Byron, whose poetry sent female fans into an erotic frenzy or the cheetah-owning, coffin-sleeping, one-legged French actress Sarah Bernhardt, who launched a violent feud with her former best friend or Edmund Kean, the dazzling Shakespearean actor whose monstrous ego and terrible alcoholism saw him nearly murdered by his own audience – the list of stars whose careers burned bright before the Age of Television is extensive and thrillingly varied.Ĭelebrities could be heroes or villains warriors or murderers brilliant talents, or fraudsters with a flair for fibbing trendsetters, wilful provocateurs, or tragic victims marketed as freaks of nature. But the famous and infamous have been thrilling, titillating, and outraging us for much longer than we might realise. Celebrity, with its neon glow and selfie pout, strikes us as hypermodern. ![]()

![]() ![]() I was so excited to see this come into play. ![]() It's a great juxtaposition (modern genetics and science + historical plagues and witchcraft), and it uses one of my personal favorite bits of history, the town of Eyam and there seeming immunity of sorts to the plague (and more current diseases). Something I was surprised (and really, really pleased) to find in Shadow Hills was the genetics aspect, mingled with the history. (That's where that mixture of science and supernatural comes in, so I'll leave that for the next question.)īR: I like that juxtaposition he's a surprise to her, but, hey, she's a total surprise to him, too. For the same reason, I wanted Phe to have different abilities from Zach. ![]() Like tectonic plates rubbing up against each other, that's what creates the action. What I find interesting in a paranormal book is reality coming up against the supernatural. There are students with super abilities and also just regular students. I think that's one thing that sets Shadow Hills and Devenish Prep apart. But while I wanted the book to be paranormal, I didn't want the school to be one where a group of people with paranormal abilities train for that paranormal ability. It gives it a nice enclosed feeling, like a world apart. Anastasia Hopcus: I've always found boarding schools fascinating, and I think a boarding school makes a great setting for a book. ![]() ![]() To even type that phrase seems somehow blasphemous. Robots on assembly lines and tractors on farms is one thing no one has yet seen the automation of creation. This battle is soon to be about the future of human endeavors writ large-about the future of human work. In 2023, this fight is about the future as well, but not just the future of writers and not just the future of the casts and crews who work with us. The future happened just as the seers at the Writers Guild of America foresaw. But at the time, no one knew what the future held and the studios were adamant that they shouldn’t be beholden to an undefined pay structure of the future. In hindsight that’s about the most obvious thing you can think of-ahem, Netflix, Apple, Amazon, Peacock, Disney Plus, Max. Writers wanted to get paid for the content they created that was then streamed. The last writers strike in 2007 was about the internet. ![]() ![]() Because the truth is that this fight is about nothing less than the future of human work. I can talk ad nauseam about the minutiae of ending mini-rooms and the value of two step deals and all the other things my union is fighting for, but then inevitably I get the polite nudge: ‘Yeah, but what is it really about?’ And that’s when things get real simple, real fast. ![]() They’re asking genuinely and I respond in kind. Three little witches in one space should be very dangerous indeed, especially because (like young skunks!) they’re not yet in full control of their powers. Mika struggles to balance her own strong desire for companionship, community, even family, and her passion for her work, with her grudging respect for Primrose’s Rules. So she’s alarmed to be caught out by a strange offer to tutor three young witches at a mysterious estate called Nowhere House. As a relief valve for her enthusiasm for witchiness, she releases videos on her YouTube channel in which she brews potions and casts spells: it’s not meant to be taken seriously, of course. ![]() Primrose is the keeper of the Rules for witches: in a nutshell, witches live in secret and in minimal contact with one another, because witches together mean too much magical dangerously combining in small spaces. She was raised by a quickly-turning-over series of tutors and nannies, who were in turn employed by an elder witch named Primrose. ![]() In the opening pages we meet Mika Moon, a young Indian-born witch living in modern-day England. Although I've been searching for a particular item, it's fun seeing whatever turns up. This morning I got out a box containing some reminders of where that decision took me. Six years ago, on a winter's day not unlike this one, I sat at the same table and made a decision that, for me, was quite daring: I decided to take a chance and temporarily jump ship, so to speak, from the life I'd fashioned for myself. An ice storm passed through Baltimore last night, and I can hear the evergreen trees outside my window creaking under the weight of their glazed branches.
